Heading to the seaside again as Trip Day returns for centenary year

Delighted committee members of Driffield Trip Day have confirmed that one of the town’s most popular events will return during its centenary year, with promises to make it bigger and better than ever.

Having been cancelled for the last two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, at a committee meeting last month, members decided it was safe enough for Driffield Trip Day to return.

With 2022 believed to mark 100 years since the first event, trippers will once again board buses from Driffield School and make the journey to Bridlington on Wednesday 3rd August.

Committee member Jolyon Lawson said it was pleasing to be able to share the news.

“Driffield Trip Day will return on Wednesday 3rd August,” he told the Wolds Weekly.

“We held a committee meeting last month and it was agreed that it was safe for the event to return.

“The last two years it has been physically impossible due to concerns over social distancing on the buses, but thankfully we do not have those concerns anymore.

“It’s very pleasing to be able to announce Driffield Trip Day is returning.

“It is a popular event with the people of Driffield and we’re sure that they will return in great numbers and enjoy their day out.”

Driffield Trip Day sees over 500 people from the Capital of the Wolds make their way to the seaside for a day on the beach or in the amusements whilst enjoying some fish and chips and an ice cream.

The tradition is believed to have first begun back in 1922 and Jolyon’s father, Colin, was a long-serving member of the committee.

Jolyon said it is fantastic to be able to mark its centenary properly.

“To the best of our knowledge, this is our centennial year,” he added.

“The first Driffield Trip Day is believed to have been held in 1922 when horse-drawn carriages took children out for a picnic at a nearby farm or in a field.

“We understand the trips to Bridlington began after the war.

“With it being the 100th anniversary, we have plans to provide additional tokens and attractions for trippers to make it extra special, with further details to follow.”
