PHOTOS: Wagoners Day at Sledmere House

Teams from army units across the country came to Sledmere to compete in various events as part of the stately home’s Wagon Challenge Day.

The teams took part in challenges including wagon run, hit the rat, driving long rein, showing in hand and tug of war, all of which were designed to replicate the training associated with the Wagoners when the unit was preparing for World War One in 1914.

The challenges were scored by military experts to determine which unit was the 2022 Wagoner champions.

The inaugural winners of the trophy were 10 Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment RLC.

As well as the team events, Sledmere’s shire horses were on display, as well as horses from The Northern Heavy Horse Society

Other highlights included an historic horse-drawn World War One horse ambulance, the Wolds Wagon, and a General Service Wagon from the Royal Logistic Corps Heritage collection.

The event proved popular with visitors and also saw demonstrations from the Corps
of Drums, the Royal Logistics Corps, and farrier Jarvis Browning, whilst the Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment performed a kukri dance.

An inflatable assault course and bouncy castle meant there was something for all ages.

Lauren Fenwick, marketing and PR officer at Sledmere House, told the Wolds Weekly it’s hoped the event will become an annual fixture.

“The Wagon Challenge Day went really well,” she said. “The competing regiments all enjoyed it and there was healthy competition throughout what was a real spectacle.

“With all the events based on how the Wagoners would have trained, it was something completely different and many of the soldiers had never even been near a horse previously.

“We’re hoping to make this an annual event and the public seemed to enjoy it, with lots of people coming along.”

The next event at Sledmere House will be the Deer Safari, which is taking place from 10am to 4:30pm on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th and Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June.
