Future of Driffield bakery Costello’s is uncertain

After over two decades on Driffield’s high street, the future of Costello’s bakery is in doubt.

The shop on Market Place was the talk of the town after it failed to open its doors.

Owners James and Louise Costello, who opened the store 23 years ago, claimed that staff shortages due to sickness and holidays was the reason behind the temporary closure.

They also said that they are assessing the best way forward whilst battling increasing costs.

In response to the rumours on social media, James said: “There have been a few myths coming out about the future of Costello’s.

“We kept the shop closed for a week to determine how/if we can move forward with recent increases in costs etc and we’ll be able to confirm this soon.

“I opened the shop 23 years ago, so it’s been a good old stint!

“In those 23 years, we’ve had some amazing staff – most of whom are still good friends and we’ve always looked after them.

“We’ve only closed the Driffield shop and are currently offering free home delivery so anyone looking to shop with us, please go and head to our website!

“Just remember guys – there’s people behind every business. People who work their backsides off to make things work and what might seem like a flippant comment is often taken to heart!

“As I said, we’ll provide a proper update soon, but obviously after such a long time we wanted to take our time in making the right decision.

“Thanks in advance for your support now and over the years on behalf of myself and the Costello family.”

Costello’s also has stores in Malton and Wetherby, with its headquarters just outside Sutton-on-the-Forest, a few miles north of York.
