Sir Greg reveals who he is backing to be next Prime Minister
East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight has revealed who he is backing in the contest to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.
Sir Greg said: “It is now for the Conservative Party membership as a whole to decide who they want to lead the party and, in the final round, I am supporting Rishi Sunak to be our next prime minister.”
Mr Sunak is currently behind his rival, Liz Truss, in the eyes of the bookmakers but Sir Greg said: “Rishi has steered our economy through bleak times and I believe will be a responsible and effective PM.
“He represents a huge farming constituency rather like East Yorkshire, so he is well aware of the rural issues which still need addressing.
“I worked closely with him when I was piloting my Parking (Code of Practice) Bill through the House of Commons. That Bill is now an Act.
“Rishi was extremely supportive of my changes to the law to help motorists and was always willing to listen to new ideas.’
“When he was Chancellor, his quick-thinking and creativity during the pandemic protected the jobs, livelihoods and wellbeing of many.
“I believe he has the intellectual grasp, integrity and political drive to be a great prime minister and that is why, although both candidates have qualities, I am giving my support to Rishi.”
