Mowing Ahead: Gardners Opens Driffield Branch

The owner of a lawn and garden specialist that recently opened a new branch in Driffield has told the Wolds Weekly how pleased he is with the response from customers during the opening two months.

Gardners Lawn & Garden Equipment has been serving customers from its Scarborough base for over 20 years and took the opportunity to bring its expertise, high-quality machinery and personal service to the Driffield area when the building that was formerly home to Elcocks became available on Skerne Road.

Gardners is run by Sam Coy and his parents Pete and Louise and supplies a range of lawn and garden machinery for domestic and professional use, as well as offering servicing and repairs at their in-house workshop.

Sam explained how providing a high level of customer service is something the team at Gardners are proud of.

“We’re a family business, made up of me and my parents, Pete and Louise, who have been helping out whilst we opened the Driffield branch,” he said.

“We’ve been open in Scarborough for just over 20 years and, as a business, we try to provide a good service, and we want customers to leave with a smile on their faces.

“We sell a wide range of garden machinery, from small lawnmowers to compact tractors to the robot mowers, which we’ve been selling for around 10 years now and that’s the way it seems to be going.

“When we sell a product to our customers, they’re given a price and that’s it, the product they’re buying will be all set up and ready to use when they get home.

“We have two workshops, a small one at Driffield which is staffed by Shaun, who looks after the Driffield branch, and a bigger one in Scarborough, where we have three members of staff and they’re always pretty busy.

“We repair almost everything we sell.”

The Skerne Road site opened in May and is already proving popular with customers and sales of machinery and servicing enquiries are increasing.

Sam said a familiar face behind the counter has also helped bring customers through the door over the last two months.

“Opening a branch in Driffield had always been at the back of my mind,” he said. “Driffield was definitely my target area, and an opportunity came up which we decided to take.

“It’s been really good so far. Shaun used to work at Elcocks and we’ve found that everyone knows who he is.

“As soon as we opened, we had people coming in to see Shaun and it’s really helped us out.

“We didn’t know what to expect and we’ve been selling products and the service work is starting to come through.”

The ambition for Gardners is to build on the early success and grow the Driffield branch to the same level as the operation that has been established in Scarborough over the last 20 years.

Reflecting on the new venture, Sam said he’s delighted with everything that has been achieved so far.

“We want to build on the success we’ve had since we opened and hopefully get to the stage where we can employ another member of staff at Driffield and bring it to the same level as we are at in Scarborough eventually,” he said.

“I’m pleased we’ve opened in Driffield. It’s been exciting and it’s been an eyeopener as we’ve noticed that the customers in Driffield are different to those in Scarborough.

“The showroom also looks great and I’m really happy with how everything has turned out.”

Gardners Lawn & Garden Equipment on Skerne Road in Driffield is open 8:30am-5pm, Monday to Friday, and 8:30am-12 noon on Saturdays.
