Two-day family fun event in support of canal restoration

Heritage fans are being urged to support and celebrate Driffield Canal’s ongoing restoration at a two-day family fun event this weekend.

People are invited to a fundraising gala in aid of the historic navigation at North Frodingham Landing on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September 2021.

Registered charity Driffield Navigation Trust, which runs the 11-mile, 250-year-old waterway, is organising the free-admission festival.

Visitors will be able to enjoy cruises on the trust’s trip boats, Lady Jayne and Driffield Navigator, which will run throughout both days.

Entertainment includes a local radio roadshow, Kylie the East Coast soul singer and water activities on both days.

The fundraiser will run from 10am to around 5pm both days, and also includes a licensed bar, a barbecue and other refreshments.

Navigation trustee David Taylor said: “The canal is a wonderful asset for Driffield and the wider East Riding area, but we don’t receive any statutory funding to keep it going.

“We are a charity that relies on fundraising and every penny we make at the gala will be spent on maintenance and improvements.

“A fully navigable Driffield Canal would bring an increase in tourism for the town and surrounding area, and also boost the local economy.

“We want people to get involved with the navigation by coming along to the gala and help us raise funds to achieve our ambitions for the waterway.”

Entertainment will include singer Kylie giving two performances on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with the local radio station keeping the show going throughout both days.

The gala could run into the early evening on Saturday if there is a continued request for boat trips and bar facilities.

Visitors will also see work undertaken by volunteers from the trust to improve facilities at the landing and wharf, near North Frodingham.
