Driffield News

Two town centre pubs close their doors on the same weekend

On the same weekend that the Original Keys opened for the final time during the tenure of landlords Matt and Leigh Rogers, another of Driffield’s pubs announced its closure.

The Tiger Inn, based on Market Place, confirmed it was closing with immediate effect, an announcement that came as a shock to many.

In a statement, Simon and Sue Skelton, who have run the pub for a number of years, paid tribute to those who have been Tiger regulars over the years.

“Unfortunately, most people will have heard The Tiger is closing,” said the social media post.

“Many thanks to all our local customers. It’s hard to say goodbye after 24 years of being in the trade and meeting some wonderful people along the way.

“A great big thank you to Mr Chris Thorley for all his hard work and support. It is so unfortunate it has to end this way.”

Last Sunday also saw the Original Keys close, with Matt bowing out after 18 years behind the decks with a final fling that ran into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Although Matt and Leigh have left for pastures new, the pub should now be under new ownership.

When the Wolds Weekly spoke to Matt earlier in the year, he confirmed that to his understanding, the pub had been leased to a company that runs a number of venues across the north of England.

It was thought a new manager would be in place ahead of planning permission being submitted by the brewery, who were reportedly set to invest around £200,000 as part of an upgrade.
